Soldier Killed During Training

Soldier Killed During Training

Being in the military comes with a certain amount of risk. While most people assume that most deaths and injuries occur in combat, a large portion of them actually occur while in training. A recent tragedy in Fort Bragg brings this to life.

One soldier was killed and two others wounded after a training exercise on the North Carolina base. The 18th Fires Brigade was participating in artillery live-fire training, when there was an incident with one of the guns. Details have not been released on what exactly happened, but it involved a M777 light, towed howitzer. Medics on the scene are credited with saving the lives of two soldiers, one of which is being treated at Womack Army Medical Center and the other at Duke University Medical Center. The soldier who was killed was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. The incident is currently being investigated by the Army.

Recent statistics indicate that training accidents account for over one third of military fatalities. When suicide and illness are also factored, it adds up to over 60% of the annual death toll.
