Gaffney, South Carolina
The name Gaffney originated from the tavern and lodging house “Gaffney’s Cross Roads.” Michael Gaffney’s opened the tavern and lodging house in 1804 after immigrating from Ireland to South Carolina’s upstate. Gaffney picked the location because two major roads intersected there, the road leading travelers from the North Carolina mountains to Charleston and another road guiding travelers from Charlotte to Georgia.
Perfect for growth, the area became quickly populated. In 1872 the area became “Gaffney City,” and became the county seat of Cherokee County. Until the 1980s Gaffney was a major contributor to the upstate’s textile industry. After interstate 85 was built many businesses opened along the interstate and in uptown Gaffney. Since then uptown Gaffney has undergone renovations and revitalization. A seasonal farmers market is a popular local attraction which is held Saturday mornings at the Old Post Office.
