Laurens, South Carolina

Laurens, home to an estimated 9,500 residents, is part of the Old 96 district of South Carolina, along with Abbeville, Greenville, McCormick, and Edgefield counties. Laurens is located in the Western part of South Carolina less than an hour away from Greenville and Columbia. The city is named after Henry Laurens, president of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War. The city is rumored to have been named Laurensville and some old maps of the city show the city’s name as Laurensville, but a town charter dating back to 1873 refers to the city as Laurens.

Many locals are employed by the Walmart Distribution center located on the outskirts of Laurens. The distribution center makes up for some of the unemployment hardships in the area. Laurens economy was driven by the textile, manufacturing, and glass industries until the last thirty years. Since then many of these businesses have closed, contributing greatly to the city’s unemployment number. In February 2009 the unemployment rate in Laurens county was over 11%.
