Aiken, South Carolina

Awarded the “All American City Award,” in 1997, Aiken is a wonderful place to visit and live. Aiken is named after William Aiken, founder of a popular railroad line in Charleston. In the 1950s the United States Atomic Energy Commission announced that it planned to build the Savannah River Site, which would be a plant that would produce fuel for thermonuclear weapons. The originally named Savannah River Plant, renamed to the Savannah River Site in 1989, began construction in November of 1950.

Aiken is home to University of South Carolina Aiken and two Steeplechase horse races. The two horse races, which each are attended by about 30,000 people are the Imperial Cup each March and the Holiday Cup in October. Due to the two major races and the Aiken natives love for the Steeplechase races, the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum was established in 1977.
