When South Carolina decided began to prepare itself for secession, Darlington formed the Darlington Guards. The guards were a group of men that were ready to defend South Carolina. The Darlington Guards were active for almost two years and received their own Armory in 1893. Many of the men continued to serve the state and many joined the National Guard. The last surviving member of the original Darlington Guards died in 1984. Even though Darlington did not have any Civil War battles fought in its county, the county is rich with southern history.
