Anderson is named after the Revolutionary War hero, Robert Anderson. Prior to being owned by the state of South Carolina, Anderson was owed by the Cherokee Indians. Electricity also made its first appearance in Anderson county around this time, thanks to the Rocky Creek River and its ability to run the water mills continuously. The city was the first in the nation to have a continuous supply of electric power. The first electric cotton gin in the world was built in Anderson. Due to all of these electric firsts, Anderson earned the nickname “The Electric City,” and still boasts this nickname today.
