Awendaw, South Carolina

The Town of Awendaw is an extremely small town located immediately beyond the northernmost end of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Officially the town occupies a mere 8.4 square miles, 0.2 of which is water, but despite its slight size the Town of Awendaw bears substantial historical significance to the Carolina Lowcountry, as well as being a key environmental science, education, and conservation center around Charleston.

Founded as the Charleston Raptor Center in 1991 the, now, South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey studies the ecological status of wild birds as it directly relates and reflects environmental changes and the condition of biodiversity as a whole. Additionally, the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge has its headquarters in Awendaw and encompasses a 22-mile segment of southeast Atlantic coast including barrier islands, salt marches, intricate coastal waterways, beaches, and maritime forests.

The Refuge preserves habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other resident species. And more specifically, the Refuge is actively working to aid in the recovery of the threatened loggerhead sea turtle. One particularly interesting piece of Awendaw history is the Old Wappetaw Church that was founded as a house of worship by refugees fleeing the Salem Witch Trials in New England during the 1690s. Today, apart from ecological centers and conservation efforts, Awendaw is home to weekly outdoor gatherings at Awendaw Green that showcase local musicians and craftsmen. And the Awendaw Blue Crab Festival annually attracts South Carolinians from all over the Palmetto State.
