The Town of James Island filed to separate itself from Charleston County but lost the case, re-filed again in 2002 and lost again. In June 2006 The Town of James Island filed suit again, after the state of South Carolina changed the state laws affecting incorporation, and won. Ever since the town won its freedom from Charleston County, Mary Clark has served as the Town of James Island Mayor, and was reelected in August 2008.Stephen Colbert, television comedian and star of the television show The Colbert Report, went attended Stiles Point Elementary School on James Island.
