Sumter, South Carolina

Home to the Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter’s population is estimated to be around 60,000 after the 2000 census. Sumter was originally named Sumterville, but the name was shortened to Sumter in 1855. The city is named after General Thomas Sumter, who was a general in the American Revolutionary war. General Sumter was known as the “fighting gamecock,” across the South and went on to serve in the United States Congress.

Sumter is governed by a council-manager style of government. Sumter was the first city in the United States to adopt the council-manager style of government, which is a style of government that combines the leadership of elected political figures to form a seven person city council that is headed by the mayor. Originally Sumter formed as a plantation town but industry today relies heavily on manufacturing, military, and the medical field.
