Walterboro, South Carolina
Walterboro, originally spelled Walterborough, is a small quaint town in Colleton County. The town was founded by two brothers, Paul and Jacob Walter, who were plantation owners near by. The Walter brothers came to Walterboro to escape their plantations when they became malaria stricken. Paul Walker’s daughter Mary became ill with malaria and brought her to Walterboro to escape the mosquito infested plantation life so she could recover from the disease. Walterboro saved Mary’s life and also altered her family’s life because after she recovered the Walter family settled in the town, which was named after them.
In 1817, Walterboro became the third county seat in Colleton County. Four years later a court house and a jailhouse were both constructed and the town’s population began to grow. With the sporadic growth in population Walterboro became a railroad stop on the rail line connecting Columbia and Charleston. In the mid 1900s Walterboro welcomed the construction of Interstate 95, connecting the town to Charleston, Savannah, and Florence. Today Walterboro, with its lovely oak lined streets and friendly locals, exemplifies southern hospitality and small town charm just as it has for the past 75 years.
